Sweat, as stinky and uncomfortable as it can be, is a natural and healthy part of life, helping to cool the body. But excessive sweating can pose problems in your social life and relationships,, and perhaps even to your emotional health, particularly if sweating is leaving noticeable damp patches or stains. In situations like these, there are some strategies that can help to reduce the amount that you sweat.
1. Medical Treatments
If you feel that you sweat excessively, you may want to consult with your doctor to see if you have a condition called hyperhidrosis. If you do, you are likely to be directed to the treatment options available to you, such as:
- Prescription antiperspirant. Your doctor can prescribe a high-strength prescription antiperspirant. Prescription creams are also available if your face and head are affected.
- Oral medication. There are some medications available from your doctor that block the chemicals that allow particular nerves to communicate with each other, which can help to reduce sweating.
- Antidepressants. Anxiety can lead to excess sweating. Your doctor may prescribe antidepressants if they feel that this is contributing to your issue.
2. Wear Breathable Fabrics
The best way to help reduce sweating with your clothing choices is to wear light, breathable fabrics with good ventilation. Natural fabrics are generally more comfortable than other kinds. They also act as sweat barriers. Cotton is the best fabric to protect against sweat because it helps to keep your body cool.
3. Try Dark Shirts or Shirts with Large Armpit Holes
Choose shirts that have large, roomy underarm holes so the airflow can help you cool down. Also, try to choose shirts with bold colour selections which is a good method of concealing any sweat that might creep up on your clothing. Avoid solid white if possible — it tends to emphasize the sweat stains.
Start with a thin layer of clothing underneath, and top it with a loose, warm piece of clothing. During hot months, wear a tank underneath a regular shirt. When it’s cold, wear a cotton long-sleeve shirt underneath a jacket or a sweater. This way, should you start sweating in the middle of the day, you can take off the top layer of clothing to help cool you down.
5. Don’t Neglect Your Feet
Feet tend to get sweaty. When it comes to hyperhidrosis, the sweat can be even more intense. If possible, try to wear sandals or go barefoot to help your feet air out. When you wear socks, choose athletic options as they soak up most of the sweat. You’ll also want to choose shoes made from natural fabrics, such as cotton and leather. It’s always a good idea to have a second pair of shoes and socks in hand, just in case.
6. Use absorbent powder on your feet to fight the odor
There are specific over-the-counter powders you can buy for this purpose. Another safe and easy trick to reduce foot odor is to cover your feet with a good amount of nice-smelling talcum powder. A generous sprinkling of powder may help absorb the sweat and moisture from your feet. You can also use baby powder or an antibacterial powder for this purpose.
7. Underarm Pads
Armpit pads are disposable cotton pads that stick to your skin or clothing to absorb excess sweat. When applying directly to the skin, armpit pads work best on dry, clean-shaven armpits.
8. Removing Sweat Stains on Clothes with Baking Soda
Pretreating clothes with a paste made from 4 tablespoons baking soda and 1/4 cup warm water can help vanquish a variety of stains. For example, rub it into shirts to remove perspiration stains; for really bad stains, let the paste dry for about two hours before washing.
