What is dandruff?
Recent studies have shown that more than 50% of people in the world has dandruff. Most people treat dandruff like an epidemic, but it is simply caused by a dry scalp. With dandruff, you will feel itchiness, patches on the scalp, dryness called seborrheic dermatitis in the scalp, as well as some small rashes on the forehead area. If you have dandruff, you should consider switching your shampoo, and it is better if you can use anti-dandruff shampoo. Following are the common causes of dandruff:
- Dry Skin
- Allergies to some hair products
- Some skin problems such as eczema or psoriasis
- Overgrowth of Malassezia
To avoid the discomforts of dandruff, you can use medically recommended anti-dandruff products, or you can follow up on the home remedies listed below.
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil is another natural remedy, which includes antimicrobial properties, retains moisture in scalp, and prevents fungal growth. Coconut oil will reduce dryness in the scalp and help to improve skin hydration, which will cause it to act as a dandruff treatment, reducing scalp irritation. Virgin coconut oil and cultured coconut extract help many skin problems because those include anti-inflammatory properties.
You can directly apply coconut oil to your scalp before a bath, and cover the hair using a hot towel for 45 minutes. Then rinse with regular shampoo or a shampoo containing coconut oil.
2. Tea Tree oil
Tea Tree oil is a popular essential oil, taken from the plant Melaleuca Alternifolia. It consists of anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties that can act against dandruff by suppressing the growth of fungi on the scalp. You can use tea tree oil in different ways, but applying it directly on the scalp should be avoided due to the risk of inflammations. You can use tea tree oil daily with shampoo, or use a shampoo which includes tea tree oil. It is important to note that tea tree oil can cause irritations if you have sensitive skin.
3. Lemongrass Oil
Lemongrass oil contains anti-microbial properties that can suppress the growth of fungus on the scalp. Lemongrass oil can also be used to reduce high blood pressure and stress. Similar to Tea Tree oil, lemongrass oil should be diluted with some water or shampoo before use, because direct contact with the scalp may cause inflammations or allergies on sensitive skin.
4. Aloe Vera Gel
Aloe Vera is a very helpful substance to reduce the dryness on the skin because it acts as a moisturiser. Enriched with amino acids and antioxidants, aloe vera helps to fight against dandruff and reduces itchiness and fungi. Most of the time, fungal infections also cause hair loss. Aloe Vera gel helps to increase moisture in the skin and promote healing. It can also reduce itchiness due to presence of anti-inflammatory properties. Get some Aloe Vera leaves and separate the gel from it. And then blend it or make a paste and apply on your scalp. After few minutes you can wash using a good shampoo. But make sure to not use conditioner after rinsing off the shampoo.
Aspirin is a painkiller which can also reduce forming dandruff in the scalp. Aspirin contains salicylic acid which is known to reduce dandruff, inflammation and oil formation in scalp. Salicylic acid is a common ingredient found in dandruff shampoo as well. Two tablets of aspirin crushed to powder can be mixed with mild shampoo and applied to the scalp before washing.
6. Baking Soda
Sodium Bicarbonate, commonly termed as baking soda, can act against dandruff by removing excess skin cells and oil from the scalp. It is also important to note that due to the high pH nature of baking soda, frequent use can cause dryness in the scalp. Baking soda can be applied directly to wet hair and massaged gently into the scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes before rinsing with regular shampoo.
7. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is another natural remedy for dandruff. The low pH of apple cider vinegar can help remove excess skin cells from the scalp and act against fungus growing in scalp. Two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar can be mixed with regular shampoo and massaged on to the scalp before rinsing.
8. Reduce Stress
Stress can be considered as an important metric when determining one’s mental as well as physical health. Although stress does not have a direct impact on forming dandruff, it can increase inflammation which can trigger dryness and itchiness in scalp. Follow techniques like meditation, yoga and deep breathing, in order to reduce stress and maintain good mental health, as well as physical health, not just to reduce dandruff but to lead a healthy and happy life.
