Coughing is a voluntary or an involuntary action which clears the throat and the respiratory tract, removing foreign particles, irritants, microbes, fluids and mucus by inhaling and rapid expelling of air from the lungs. Cough is a common symptom that indicates some other illness or cause that affects the human body.
Before getting treatments, you need to check whether your surroundings have dusty conditions. It is always a good habit to dust and tidy up your bed before going to sleep. Otherwise dust allergies may be triggered and it will increase your cough. Also make sure to wash your bedsheets once a week with hot water.
Sometimes cough only occurs at night as a result of mucus pooling at the back of the throat when you are lying flat. If you are suffering from frequent cough or a cough that lasts for a long time, you should consult a physician. But in the meantime, some home remedies can give relief from cough.
1. Honey Tea
Honey tea is a good treatment for coughing. It can act against inflammations which can give relief against sore throat by clearing mucus blockage and reducing inflammations. Two spoons of honey mixed with warm water, herbal tea or warm lemon water can be consumed twice a day. The lemon juice helps cut through congestion and the honey soothes the throat. Or else you can consume two tablespoons of honey or spread it on bread as a snack.
Ginger can act as an anti inflammatory agent which soothes coughing. Add 20-40g of fresh ginger slices to a cup of hot water, and you will have a hot cup of ginger tea that could give relief from cough. Ginger contains bioactive compounds and antimicrobial properties that may fight against infections.
Hydration is an important factor which needs to be concerned in treating a cough. Consuming hot beverages like,
- Clear broths
- Herbal tea
- Warm water
can sooth the pain and provide relief against cough.
Steam is the most widely used treatment, as well as the best treatment for wet cough (the type which produces mucus). It helps to open nasal passages and relieves congestion in the chest. Inhaling steam of boiling water for about 5 min can help with wet cough. Steaming will not cure the infection but it will enable you to breathe without coughing. Take great care when steaming in order to avoid burning yourself with either the steam or boiling water.
5. Marshmallow root
Marshmallow root is an herb which is considered as a treatment for cough and sore throat. This herb has the ability to clear mucus blockages and ease itchiness in the throat. Marshmallow roots are available either as tea bags or as the dried herb itself.
6. Salt Water Gargle
This is the simple treatment method against cough and sore throat. It can reduce the itchy feeling in the throat too. Stir a half a teaspoon of salt into a cup of warm water and gargle; let the salt water rinse the back of the throat for a few minutes before spitting out. Gargling several times a day will help quickly bring relief from throat infections.
Bromelain is an enzyme contained in pineapple core. This enzyme acts as an anti-inflammatory agent against cough. However, bromelain in pineapple juice may not be enough to fight against cough. Bromelain supplements can be taken under doctor reference too. You should also note that bromelain can be allergic to some people as well.
Thyme is an herb used to treat common cough and sore throat. Thyme is an ingredient in cough syrup which give relief against cough along with ivy leaves. A cough syrup containing thyme or thyme tea made by adding two teaspoons of dried thyme to hot water, can be used.
9. Dietary Changes for Acid Reflux
Acid reflux a burning pain in lower chest area due to flow back of stomach acid into the food pipe, which can be a cause for cough as well. To prevent this, you should stop consuming types of food that can trigger acid reflux.
Types of food that cause acid reflux differs from person to person. However, food and beverages like alcohol, caffeine, chocolates, citrus food, mint, garlic and onion can cause this effect often.
Vitamins are organic compounds that play an important role in the functioning of the human body. Among them, vitamin C helps to maintain the immune system, and it is also consumed as a cough treatment method. Also, N-acetylcysteine (NAC) contains amino acid L-cysteine which helps to reduce mucus in the airways and give relief from wet cough.
